WebJan 5, 2024 · In case you are absolutely sure that a particular file is LOCAL, and not involved in any syncing scheme (DropBox or OneDrive), you can reset the grey X icon flag in Windows CMD with the command ATTRIB -O . Do a CD to the folder with the problematic file and perform: attrib -O "my problem file.txt" on that file. WebObviously the new windows install knows nothing about these files but now they are all showing a grey X and will not let me open them. All of the solutions I have found talk about unlinking, logging out etc but these files should have nothing to do with the fresh one drive install. I have tried these steps to no avail though.

A support tech told me the solution is to update and sync all files on OneDrive. I had a similar issue witht here being a grex X in the lower left of the file and determined it had something to do with the PDF file being synced to my Dropbox.
